- "So throughout life our worst weaknesses and meannesses are usually committed for the sake of the people whom we most despise." (Chp. 27) This is right after Pip is rude to Joe when he comes to visit him in London. I'm wondering why Pip was so rude to Joe, was it just to show-off that he was better than him now? Why did Pip care more about showing off to Drummle than Joe's feelings?

Great Expectations: Question

I think Pip was rude to Joe because he was kind of trying to show off his new social class. Being a gentlemen, Pip thought that everyone of a lower class looked up to him and he could act however he wanted. But later after realizing that it was Joe, his friend and mentor, he went home to apologize for his actions.
ReplyDeletePip thinks that he is above Joe because of his new rank in social class. So in turn, Pip makes Joe feel like less of a person for it. Later Pip feels remorse, and comes to realize again how much Joe cared, and still does care for him. Pip returned and then apologized to Joe.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both Jake and Elli. I think Pip is trying to prove to Joe that he's moved up in social standings and no longer needs Joe.
